schedule a free phone consultation

This 20-minute call is an opportunity for us to get to know each other, answer any questions you may have, get a feel for what you’d like to work on in therapy, and explore if I am a good fit for you. We can also go over the “logistics” like scheduling availability and cost. If you feel ready to start, we can schedule our first session! Before our intake, I will invite you to complete some paperwork via the client portal.

meet for your intake session

During the 50-minute intake session, my goal is to learn more about you, build trust together and understand your goals and intentions for therapy. We will also go over any additional questions you have about paperwork, confidentiality, and/or logistics. It is not a requirement (nor is it usually possible!) to go through all of your history in the first appointment. We can go at your pace, and your safety is paramount to me when discussing past events that may be traumatic or challenging. We will also decide together at what frequency we will plan to meet, and schedule our recurring sessions.

meet for recurring sessions

As we go, our goals, frequency, and how our work together looks can be fluid - meeting you where you are. While most clients schedule recurring 50-minute sessions weekly or every other week, I do offer extended 80-minute sessions if those feel better for you and your processing style. There is no difference in cost if/when you choose to use art-making in sessions.

check-ins / shorter sessions

Shorter therapy sessions are available in addition to your recurring sessions if you need a little more support, but not quite a whole therapy “hour.” Shorter sessions may also be a good fit for established clients who are feeling good about their progress, but would still like to maintain some therapeutic support. Shorter sessions are not the best fit as a standalone service for folks who are just getting started or who are wanting to actively work towards goals in therapy, as it is generally not enough time to “dig in.” If you are interested but unsure if this would be a good option for you, I am happy to talk more about shorter sessions together!

what is art therapy like, anyway?

Art therapy is about imagination and creativity; it is a way to explore new or different perspectives or possibilities. How often this translates into actual art making is totally up to you, every single session. Sometimes this means that we won’t use art making at all, but we may discuss symbolism, use reflective imagery (like tarot & oracle cards), or talk in metaphor.

Making art in session can look like a lot of things: an ongoing project that we work on over time, just keeping your hands busy, exploring/processing something specific using a prompt or “directive”, or going with the flow and seeing what happens! How much we talk during art making is also your decision. And don’t worry about getting special materials - we can always work with whatever you already have. However, if you’re interested in obtaining more materials, I’m happy to talk about that as well.

Art making skills are not at all necessary to participate in or benefit from art therapy. The beauty of art therapy is that it can be for anyone. If you are nervous or anxious about making art, or concerned you’re not “good enough” at it, that is totally normal - and something we can work through together, if you’d like.

And art making is never a requirement to work together. If you have any questions about art therapy, please let me know!
